Yep, they call it a day. Setelah berkarier selama 31 tahun (1980 – 2011), grup musik R.E.M. akhirnya membubarkan diri.Selama 31 tahun itu, mereka merilis 15 album studio, yang terakhir dirilis bulan Maret 2011 lalu berjudul Collapse Into Now. Band ini didirikan tahun 1980 di Athens, Georgia oleh Michael Stipe (vokal), Peter Buck (gitar), Mike Mills (bass), dan Bill Berry (drum). R.E.M. mengawali kariernya sebagai band underground yang terkenal di kalangan mahasiswa, merilis lima album dengan label indie IRS: Murmur (1983), Reckoning (1984), Fables of the Reconstruction (1985), Lifes Rich Pageant (1986), dan Document (1987). Warner Bros kemudian mengontrak mereka sampai sekarang. Lima album kemudian dirilis: Green (1988), Out of Time (1991), Automatic for the People (1992), Monster (1994), dan New Advenures in Hi-Fi (1996) sebelum Bill Berry mengundurkan diri. Berry mendesak band untuk tetap berlanjut sebagai trio, yang kemudian merilis lima album terakhir: Up (1998), Reveal (2001), Around the Sun (2004), Accelerate (2008), dan Collapse Into Now (2011).
R.E.M. mulai dikenal di Amerika Serikat berkat hit top 10, The One I Love dari album Document (1987). Setelah menandatangani kontrak dengan Warner Bros, mereka mulai dikenal di seluruh dunia.
