Lagu ini ditulis oleh Billy Steinberg dan Tom Kelly, duet penulis lagu-lagu hit, seperti: Like a Virgin (Madonna), Eternal Flame (Bangles), I Drove All Night (Roy Orbison/Cyndi Lauper/Celine Dion), So Emotional (Whitney Houston), I’ll Stand by You (Pretenders), dan True Colors (Cyndi Lauper/Phil Collins). Steinberg dan Kelly merekam Alone untuk proyek mereka, i-Ten (1983). Lagu ini kemudian menjadi soundtrack untuk serial TV Dreams (1984) yang dibintangi John Stamos, yang pernah juga ditayangkan di TVRI. Stamos berduet dengan Valerie Stevenson untuk menyanyikan lagu Alone. Saat Heart akan merekam lagu ini, Tom Kelly mengubah baris pertama refrein dari: “I always fared well on my own” menjadi “Till now, I always got by on my own”. Versi Heart menduduki posisi pertama di Billboard Hot 100 dan menjadi versi yang paling terkenal. Celine Dion merekam ulang lagu ini untuk album Taking Chances (2007).
